Westendorf is a municipality in the Kitzbuhel district and is located 13.70 km west of Kitzbuhel as well as 12 km southeast of Worgl in the Brixental valley. The community is a popular ski resort as well as a popular location for Summer tourism especially for excursions and walking-tours. Westendorf was mentioned for the first time in documents in 1234. It has 21 village parts and the number of inhabitants are steadily increasing (current standing: 3477).

This professional holiday was founded by the Decree of the President of Russia № 1279 from October, 31st, 2002 in commemoration of 200-year-old anniversary of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among diplomats also there is a version, that Day of the diplomatic worker is celebrated on February, 10th as this day in 1549 there was earliest mention of the Ambassadorial Order, the first foreign policy department of Russia.
