Mississauga , incorporated in 1974, is a city with a population of 668,549 as of the 2006 census. Canada's sixth-most populous municipality, located in the Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario, and part of the Greater Toronto Area. Mississauga has almost doubled in population in each of the last two decades. It had the largest population growth in Canada (89,500) between the census years of 1986-1991. Another 80,994 were added between 1991-1996; an increase of 17.5%. From the 1996-2001 censuses, Mississauga gained a further 68,543 residents; an increase of 12.6%. From 2001 to 2006 the population increased 9.1%. As a suburb, Mississauga's growth is attributed to its proximity to Toronto.
