Jacó (which means "horse", and is know by locals as "The city of surf")is a coastal city in Costa Rica's Puntarenas province, located on the Central Pacific Region, in the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Jacó is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from San José, and one of it´s closest beaches. It lies between several mountains, and encompasses the beaches of Herradura, Jacó and Hermosa. At about 15 miles north of Jacó, lies the popular Carara National Park, recognized for it´s scarlet macaws, toucans and white faced monkeys. Jacó is a city booming with tourism, and hosts several restaurants, shops, nightclubs, discos, and all-inclusive hotels, as well as several expensive condominiums and houses. Surfing draws many people to the beaches, which are known for their consistent 3 to 4 meter surf. Other activities such as canopy, aerial trams, ATV riding, kayaking and scuba diving are offered around the area. For 2009, the International Surf Association will hold the WORLD MASTERS SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP in Jacó. The event will take place from July 31 to August 8. During this same year, a new 5 star condo-hotel resort, Wyndham Jaco Beach, will begin construction. It's the first beachfront condo-hotel in Costa Rica, the world renowned Wyndham Hotel Chain will be flagging this resort for rentals and management.
