Verdun (medieval German: Wirten, official name before 1970 Verdun-sur-Meuse) is a city and commune in the Lorraine région, northeast France, in the Meuse département, of which it is a sous-préfecture. Population 25,000. Verdun is the most populous commune in Meuse, although it is not the préfecture (capital), which resides in the slightly smaller Bar-le-Duc.

My father fought in 5 battles in and around Verdun in WW1 in the American Expediinary Force, so it was important for me to visit the area. It is a lovely city and the American Cemetary north of Verdun is a "must" visit. Also the candied almond factory.

The city is sadly lacking in decent hotels and resturants.

This professional holiday was founded by the Decree of the President of Russia № 1279 from October, 31st, 2002 in commemoration of 200-year-old anniversary of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among diplomats also there is a version, that Day of the diplomatic worker is celebrated on February, 10th as this day in 1549 there was earliest mention of the Ambassadorial Order, the first foreign policy department of Russia.
