Guadeloupe, an island in the group of West-Indian Windward Islands, is a French territory, as well as adjourning isles (Mari-Gallant, Desired, Le-Saint, Saint-Bartholomew, Ptit-Ter and northern part of St.-Martin Island).
Limy- soil plateaus and volcanoes are conspicuous in its relief. Sugar-cane, banana and citrus plantations are scattered elsewhere. Discovered in 1493 by Ch. Columbus, and in 1674 declared a French territory, Guadeloupe has a status of French “overseas department” since 1946.
