Naples (Italian: Napoli) is the capital of the region of Campania and of the province of Naples. The city has a very rich history dating back to over 2,800 years. It has the third largest population in Italy of an estimate of 963,522 inhabitants. Naples was founded by the Ancient Greeks as "Νεάπολις", Neápolis, which in English means New city. Naples was the capital city of between the years 1282 until 1816 of the Kingdom of Naples, and then in union with Sicily it was the capital of the Two Sicilies until Italy unified separate rules into one.
Naples has some famous landmarks such as: Castel Nuovo (Italian: "New Castle"), Castel dell'Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito.
History:
The history of the city dates back to 8th century B.C. when a Greek colony Cumae founded a city named Parthenope. Last emperor of Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustulus, was sent in exile to Naples by King Odoacer. Eventually the Western Roman Empire lost it’s rule and the Germanic people (migrants from Scandanavia) from the Ostrogothic Kingdom moved into Naples. However, Belisarius of the Byzantine Empire (also known as the Eastern Roman Empire) conquered the city in 536.
In 1266 Naples was party of the Kingdom of Sicily, but later in 1458 the kingdom split into Sicily and Naples, but still remained under the control of Ferdinand I (King of Naples from 1458 to 1494). During this period Naples became Europe's second largest city after only Paris. During the time of Ferdinand IV, Naples fell to the control of the French, during the French Revolution (1789–1799) in the year of 1798. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 saw the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily combined to form the Two Sicilies and Naples became the capital city.
During World War II Naples was the most bombed Italian city. They were also the first city to rise up against the German military occupation. By 1943 the people of Naples freed their city from the fascists completely. At present day Naples still has some internal issues such as high unemployment and the Naples waste management issue, however the current president of Italy Silvio Berlusconi held senior meetings inside the city to show the intend to tackle these problems.
Culture:
Naples is famous for its dishes and wines. There has been a strong influenced from several civilizations: Greeks, Spanish, French. Neapolitan cuisine appeared completely as its own original dish in the 18th century. Naples is considered to be the home of pizza. The Margherita Pizza served worldwide today, was named after Queen Margherita (the daughter of Ferdinand, Duke of Genoa).
The history of Naples as a strong musical power can be traced back to the time of Spanish rule where organised music conservatories of Naples were first introduced. The earliest six-string guitar was created by a Neapolitan named Gaetano Vinaccia in 1779 (known as the romantic guitar).
Football is the most popular sport in Naples; a sport which was brought to them by the English in the 1900’s and quickly became part of the local culture.
Climate:
Naples has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers. In the summer the average temperature is between 26-29 C and in winter time the temperature is estimated to be 12-16 C on average.
