Hokkaidō è la più settentrionale delle 4 isole principali dell'arcipelago giapponese e la meno sviluppata. Il termine Hokkaidō letteralmente significa via per il mare settentrionale. Originariamente veniva chiamata Ezo ed era abitata principalmente dagli indigeni Ainu. L'isola è caratterizzata da una natura selvaggia e da inverni rigidi; Hokkaido attira amanti della natura e degli sport invernali nei mesi più freddi, ciclisti, campeggiatori ed escursionisti da giugno a settembre. Tutta l'isola è un'unica prefettura. Il suo capoluogo è Sapporo.
