Almaty (già nota come Alma-Ata, in russo Алма-Ата; in precedenza Vernyi) è una città (1.128.000 abitanti) del Kazakistan, la più popolosa del paese e situata sulle pendici dei monti Zailijski Alatau, presso la frontiera con il Kirghizistan. Fu la capitale dello stato fino al 1998. Importante nodo ferroviario, presenta un tessuto economico sviluppato (industrie agricole, alimentari, meccaniche). È sede di un'università e di un'Accademia delle scienze.
