General Information:
Aagtekerke is a town in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the Veere municipality. The town lies approximately 9km norwest of Middelburg. In the year 2001 the town had a population of 1,476 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town is about 0.22 square kilometers. In former days the town served as place for accomodation for toursists who came to Domburg which was famouse for a large area of holidays houses.

History:
Until July 1, 1966 Aagtekerke was an independent municipality. On that date it merged with municipality of Mariekerke (which later merged into the municipality of Veere in 1997). The city Aagtekerke was named after saint Agatha (patron of the village). The name of the saint was derived from a Greek word 'agathos' which means ‘good’. Since the beginning of the 14th century, Aagtekerke built a church. The church was dedicated to Saint Agatha. The tower of the church had to be rebuilt after the Beleg of Middelburg war in the years of 1572-1574. Finally in 1956 there was restoration made on the walls of the monument. In 1801 a wooden corn mill was built. The corn mill over the years was sold several times. first it was sold by Piet Brand to L.A. Verhage in 1824. In 1866 the mills was re-sold and bought by Pieter Kwekkeboom. For many years it was working until 2001 when after restoration it was closed completely.

Religion:
The protestant church plays a large role in the city. The council election was won by a group called SGP whom received 61.9% of the total votes on the 7th of March 2006.
