General Information: Aalsmeer is a Dutch municipality and a town located in the province of Noord-Holland. The town is located 13 km from the capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam. Aalsmeer is famous for the larget flower market auction and is sometimes referred to as the “flower capital of the world”. History: In 1133 Aalsmeer was orginially named “Alsmar” and was granted to the Abbey of Rijnsburg. At this period the area was a wilderness with alders and willow forests. The land was dug up creating large lakes and ponds. This left very little room for agriculture and the inhabitants switched to fishery. The land was refined intensely, mostly for tree nurseries. Starting form 1650 some of the land was reclaimed and in 1880 the cultivation of flowers began, first with roses in greenhouses. During the second world war Aalsmer gained a reputation of supporting Nazi’s because of the fanatical national socialist mayor at the time. In 1968 the two auction businesses merged and formed the United Flower Auctions Aalsmeer. In 1972 a new large auction structure was completed in South Aalsmeer and extended in 1999. Having 999,000 square meters of floor space, the flower auction structure is the largest commercial building in the world.
