General Information: Aardenburg is a small city located close to the Belgium border. It is part of the Sluis municipality and is located in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Aardenburg wan an independent municipality until 1995 when it merged with the Sluis municipality. History: Archeologists have found evidence of settlement as early as 4500 BC where the city is located now. The town has a church called the Sint-Baafskerk which has a characteristic of Gothic architecture of the Scheldt. During the second world war some of the city buildings were damaged. When restoring the damage Roman rooftiles, and sandals were found dating back to 175 to 270 AD. An archaeological museum of Aardenburg was built in the 17th century located on the Maarktstraat and was opened in 1969. The museum contains objects form Roman times such as ancient sculls and weapons.
