General Information:
Abcoude is a municipality and village in the northwest of the Dutch province Utrecht, bordering with municipality of Amsterdam. As counted on December 31st, 2008 the village has 8,675 inhabitants. The area of Abcoude is 32.11 squred kilomteres out of which 1.75 squared kilometers is occupied by water

History:
The municipality of Abcoude was created in 1941 when Abcoude-Proosdij ans Aasdom was connected to the municipality of Abcoude-Baambrugge. The history of the village dates back to 1085 when it was first spoken of by van Koenraad bishop of Utrecht. A castle was built in 1274 but was later destroyed by the neighbor Gijsbrecht van Amstel. However later in the history the castle was rebuilt. In 1672 Abcoude was burnt down by the French and was later rebuilt. In 1820 the city of Abcoude only had a population of 1100 inhabitants. However by 2001 the city had approximately 6000 people living there.
