General Information:
Acquoy is a town in the Dutch province of Gelderland, it is pronounced "Akkooi". It is a part of the municipality of Geldermalsen, and lies about 12 km east of Gorinchem.

History:
According to a lore Jan van Arkel the village Acquoy was founded, after he returned in 1133 from a crusade. This is however is not possible because the year 1133 falls in a period when there were no crusades.The first crusade was in 1096-99 and the Second in 1147-49. In 1305 Acquoy belonged to the possessions of the lord of Voorne.
In 1364 Catherina of Voornenburgh leanded her house with a citadel of Acquoy for 10 years to Otto van Arkel which he later bought.
Acquoy for some time went from one ruler to the other until it was bought in 1513 byFloris van Egmond (graaf van Buren). During the marriage of Willem of Orange with the grand daughter of Floris van Egmond, Anna van Egmond together with Leerdam , made Acquoy the property of the House of Orange.
Acquoy remained property of the House of Orange until 1795, when it became part of Holland, together with Leerdam. In 1820 it became part of the province Gelderland, because it became part of the municipality of Beesd. The shield of the Barony of Acquoy can nowadays still be seen in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
