Millions of Catholics worldwide know the name Fatima, one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the world and the site of a miraculous happening in 1915. In that year, three humble peasant children were allegedly visited by a series of angels and finally the Virgin Mary. The three girls first saw the apparitions while saying the rosary after lunch and saw several more angelic visions before the Blessed Virgin Mary arrived. To commemorate these amazing events, a vast white chapel, Shrine of Fatima and gigantic esplanade have been built to hold the crowds of 100,000 who flock here for the main pilgrimages on May 12-13 and October 12-13. The tombs of Jacinta and Francisco, two of the witnesses to the visions, also get plenty of attention during the midnight processions of pilgrims.
