Villaviciosa is a town and concejo (municipality) in the autonomous community of Asturias, Spain. It is situated on the central eastern coastline, and borders the Asturian municipalities of Gijón and Siero to the west, Sariego, Nava, Cabranes and Piloña to the south and to Colunga to the east. The total area is 271 km² and its population is 14,360 (2005). It includes 41 parroquias (parishes). Villaviciosa was the scene of heavy fighting and a series of atrocities in the Civil War (1936-39). The area was loyal to the Republic and was subjugated by the Nationalists with great brutality. It has been at the focus of recent efforts in Spain to come to terms with the events of that period, with the discovery of mass graves. Villaviciosa is at the centre of Spain's apple and cider industries. There are a number of exhibitions on this subject in the locality.
