Hungerford is a market town and civil parish in Berkshire, England, 10 miles (16 km) west of Newbury. It covers an area of 6,729 acres (27 km²) and, according to the 2001 census, has a population of 5,700 (2006 estimated at 6,000). Hungerford is remembered for a particularly tragic aspect of the town’s history, the Hungerford massacre on 19 August 1987. The incident resulted in the deaths of 17 people including the killer, Michael Ryan, a local loner.
