The Dominican Republic is situated in the eastern part of Haiti Island. It occupies approximately two thirds of island; other part is occupied with the state Haiti.
The Dominican Republic was opened by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and was declared the property of Spain.
Climate is tropical. Winter is mainly dry and summer is damp. The season of hurricanes comes near the end of summer. Air temperature fluctuates from +24 to +29 °С.
Island relief is mountainous, that makes it dismembered on deep valleys with sharp peaks of mountains. Plains are located close to the northern part of island.
The basic part of the population of Dominican Republic consists of descendants of the Spanish colonists and the African slaves who were brought here in 16 century.
Primary activity of the population of the country is agriculture. The population is mainly occupied in breeding of large horned livestock and sugar cane cultivation.
The main sights are located in the capital city Santa-Domingo. They are the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, tower Torre del Omenahe and Diego Columbus's palace.
