Uxbridge is a town in the London Borough of Hillingdon in West London, England. It is a suburban development situated 15 miles (24 km) west north-west of Charing Cross and near to the boundary with Buckinghamshire which is locally the River Colne. The name is derived from "Wuxen Bridge" which was likely to have been near the bottom of Oxford Road where the "Swan and Bottle" now stands. The Wuxen were a 7th-century Saxon tribe. By 1965, urban London had further expanded and almost all of the original area was incorporated into Greater London. Middlesex is still used informally as an area name and may be included in some postal addresses.
